A myxoma is a non-cancerous (benign) growth in the heart. Myxomas can range in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters. The majority of myxomas develop in the atrium, which is the top left chamber of the heart. These myxomas originate from a stalk on the wall between the two sides of the heart. Myxomas are most commonly found in the heart and are known as cardiac myxomas, which are the most common type of primary cardiac tumor in adults.

A myxoma that develops within the heart can obstruct blood flow through the valve.

Myxomas can only be treated with surgery, which should be scheduled as soon as possible. During the procedure, your surgeon will access the heart and remove the myxoma by making an incision down the center of the breastbone or through a small incision on the chest wall.
