Vitamin D deficiency or Rickets is only one of the reasons for frontal bossing and delayed anterior fontanel closure. There are other signs of rickets which must be looked for. They are expanded wrists, rachitic rosary or beading of ribs and bow legs, if the child is bearing weight. For the diagnosis of rickets one needs blood test for Vitamin D level, another blood test which is so called Bone Profile and an X-ray of left wrist. If rickets is proven, Vitamin D drops are needed in much higher doses than 10 drops a day. Vitamin D is one of vitamins whose excess may be harmful. It should only be given to a person when its deficiency has been established by testing.
