Salam, I find that some psychiatrists prescribe unnecessary medications when the symptoms can be managed with minimal medications and therapy. I am happy to provide consultation on what is the best form of management for your condition.

The prescribing doctor is the best judge in most cases. First of all we have to assess that it is simple OCD or it symptom of some other illness. If simple OCD than there are three interventions, biological, psychological and social. You say Effexor is good for you. Effexor is good for depression but usually not the choice medicine for OCD, however, if secondary to depression than would definitely be effective. Olanzapine or Risperidone are usually given in those cases of simple OCD not responding to antidepressant alone. However, there are few co-morbidities where they can be given. They all have side effects so should be given where necessary. CBT is psychological intervention usually carried out by Clinical Psychologist. Social intervention is psycho education for caregivers.

Yes, there are about seven commonly used medicines for OCD, six are SSRI and one is Tricyclic antidepressant. Similarly OCD or Behavior therapy is usually advised as psychological intervention.
