herpes simplex is viral infection. after clearing of lesions the virus is not totally eradicated and goes in dormant or inactive form to get stored in the sensory nerves of affected area. it can get activated any time whn ever immunity is low like due to stress or on chemotherapy or in sunlight exposure on high altitudes or pregnancy or old age or any scratch of the affected area
